The 11 year course with my student! Our value of Learning and Teaching

この写真はロンドンの日本料理店で生徒と撮った写真です。この生徒とは今年が11年目になりますが、毎週日本語のレッスンをしています。イギリスの大学で教え始めた時から15年半経ちますが、今回はこれまでの経験から学んだことを皆さんと共有したいと思います。皆さんが学んだり教えたりするのに役に立てばうれしいです。

This is the photo with my student at the Japanese restaurant in London. We have a Japanese lesson every week and our course is now the 11th year this February. 15 years and half have passed since I started my career at the UK university and I would like to share what I have learnt from my experience. It might be useful when you learn and teach.

教える側と学ぶ側の信頼関係の大切さは感じていましたが、お互いにとって有意義な時間・人生にするために私に何ができるのか考えていました。単に知識を暗記をするだけなら教科書を買って覚えれば、先生はいりませんからね。そこで、この2つのポイントが重要だと気が付きました。

I knew the importance of trust between a teacher and a learner, but I wanted to know how I could enrich our time and life through the lessons. Because you do not need a teacher if you just read a textbook and memorise the information. And I realised these two important points.

一つ目は日本人のふるまいや考え方を理解してもらうことです。文法と日本人のものの見方を合わせて教えたら、生徒たちがとても喜んでくれたんです。例えば、「明日会いたいですか。」という表現を使わないのは、日本人が欲を表すのは良くないと思っているからだと教えると、とても面白いと言ってくれました。生徒たちはまず日本について学びたかったんですね。

One is to let learners understand the Japanese attitude and the ways of thinking. My students were very happy when I taught Japanese perspectives behind the expressions. For example, the reason why ‘Do you want to meet tomorrow?’ is not used in Japanese is because the native speakers consider that showing one’s desire is not socially appropriate. And my students found it very interesting. They actually wanted to learn about Japan.

2つ目は、まず生徒を主役にして考えさせることです。生徒たちが言いたいことを言えるようにガイドすることも教える側にとって大切だと思いました。今まで学んだことをヒントに新しい場面にも使えるようにヒントを与えると、がんばって表現を作ります。生徒たちは自分が言いたいことが自力で言えると心から笑顔で喜んでくれます。

The other is to let learners think as the main character of the lesson. I found the importance of guiding them to express what they really want to say. They try to make a sentence in the new situation through my hints from what they have learnt so far. They feel great about themselves when they finally make the sentence on them own.

これは頭を使うことで記憶にも残りやすくなるのと、「できた！」という達成感からモチベーションも上がります。ステージでパフォーマンスしている生徒を横で見て応援している感じです。

In this way, learners need to use their brain and it is actually good for their memory. And their achievement also motivates them even more. It is like I am watching and supporting the performer on the stage at the side.

それで、2016年にArai Academy of Japanese Studiesを立ち上げたとき、スローガンを「輝いて」にしました。生徒たちは私の人生の宝で、私の使命は彼らにグローバルな見方ができて、自信ある充実した人生を送ってほしいと願っています。

That’s why the slogan of Arai Academy of Japanese Studies is ‘Enrich your life!’ My students are my treasure in my life and my mission is to support them to become a global citizen and to feel great about their life.

例えば、会社などで教える内容によっては、相手の本来の興味について、アクティブに学ばせると効果的かもしれませんね。皆さんはどう学びたいですか。それから、人に教えるとき、どんな点を大切にしていますか。

It depends on the contents, but it might be effective if you let people engage and learn actively on something they are really seeking for. How would you like to learn? And what do you value when you teach? Let’s enrich our life!
