Hello, my name is Arai from Arai Academy of Japanese Studies. There is a famous Japanese proverb, "Continuation is power. It means that if you keep doing it, one day it will become a tremendous power. However, have you ever felt that you could not continue to do something that you wanted to do? I would like to share how Matt-san, who has been studying Japanese for 13 years, keeps learning Japanese for so long. I hope that his story will be motivational for you.

Matt began studying Japanese after traveling to Japan in 2010. He loved French when he was a student and has studied at a university in Quebec, Canada. But for Matt, who is British, learning French and learning Japanese are two very different things. And he likes cross-cultural learning and learning foreign languages, which is why he is now working as an English teacher and especially enjoys teaching to Japanese people.

I first met Matt in February 2012 when I was still a university lecturer and was introduced to me by my friend. At that time, he was not able to understand or speak in Japanese at all. He has not been to Japan since 2010 at all, has no Japanese friends or colleagues, and has no particular hobbies related to Japan, but I am impressed about his efforts when I see his current level where he can communicate well with me.

The key for him to continue is that he follows the advice from someone with experience, and does it as advised. I gave him advice on how to practise Japanese, which was the same method when I was studying English and he did it one by one. And it was completely different from the way he studied French. Doing it seemed to give him confidence. Now he is at a level where he can understand anything I say. It is very important to implement advice from someone with experience.

It took me about 15 years from zero to the level I feel satisfied and I am sure it will take about the same amount of time for Matt as well. I think it is wonderful that he takes a lesson every week to achieve this level. It was also a real pleasure to celebrate the 13th year of our course in London last month. I would like to continue to support students who are working hard like him.

Learning a foreign language is difficult for most people. In fact, sometimes it feels like you don't make any progress for days, but if you find a good way to study, you will get better every day! When I read my old notes or textbooks that I used a year or five years ago, I am very happy to realize that I have made tremendous progress in understanding everything I didn't understand in the past!

For me, Arai-sensei's teaching style helps me more than anything else. We always study expressions and make sentences in our lessons using real situations and situations that I can use. This makes it very easy for me to remember and use kanji, grammar, and vocabulary. I would definitely continue studying Japanese with joy with Arai-sensei.

Is there something you want to continue but are not sure if you should actually give up? I would strongly recommend you to get advice from someone who has been through the same experience. You can trust their advice and take action. In this way, you might be able to keep going like Matt. Good luck!

Matt teaches English to Japanese people. Since he understands Japanese, he knows how difficult English is for Japanese people to learn English, and most importantly, he is very passionate about teaching English. If you are interested, please see this LINK.
