Become a Successful Learner - Advice from Professor Tatsuo Yoshikawa

 <Interview with Professor Tatsuo Yoshikawa from Keio University>

Arai: Hello. Today I am visiting Keio University, and we would like to share some useful information from Professor Yoshikawa for those of you who are studying foreign languages. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

新井: こんにちは。今日は慶応大学のキャンパスにお邪魔しておりまして、吉川先生から外国語を学んでいる皆さんのためにお役にたつような情報を発信させていただきたいと思います。よろしくお願いします。

Prof. Yoshikawa: My pleasure. My name is Yoshikawa and I am a professor at Keio University. I specialize in Chinese films and foreign language education.

吉川先生: よろしくお願いします。 慶應義塾大学の吉川と申します。専門は中国映画と外国語教育をやっております。

Arai: I first met Professor Yoshikawa when I was teaching at the University of London. We are still continuing our relationship. Thank you very much for this opportunity today.

新井: 吉川先生とは、私がロンドン大学で教えていた頃にちょうどお世話になったということで知り合いになりました。今も関係を続けさせていただいてます。よろしくお願いいたします。

Prof. Yoshikawa: It’s my pleasure.

吉川先生: よろしくお願いします。

Arai: First of all, I would like to ask you about the learning environment. For example, if someone wants to study at a school, what kind of school do you think is best for him or her to choose?

新井: まずはですね、学ぶ環境についてお聞きしたいんですけれども、例えば学校で学びたいという人の場合、どのような学校を選ぶのがいいと思いますか。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Well, of course, a school with excellent facilities is good, but I think it is more important to choose a school that is easy to commute to. I mean it is important to choose a school in terms of being able to continue to study, and of course, including an online school.

吉川先生: そうですね、設備が充実しているところはもちろんいいと思いますけど、通いやすいところが大事なんじゃないか なと思います。続けられるという意味では通いやすいところが大事だと思いますし、それから、もちろんオンラインでできるようなところも大事だと思います。

Arai: It is true that the most important point in language learning is to continue.

新井: 確かに続けることが言語学習では一番大事なポイントかもしれませんね。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Yes, absolutely.

吉川先生: そうですね。

Arai: location, online, and so on. Thank you very much. Then, when choosing a teacher, for example, a tutor, what kind of teacher do you think we should choose?

新井: 場所とかオンラインですとか、そういうことですね。ありがとうございます。では、先生を選ぶ場合、例えばチューターとかですね、先生を選ぶ場合はどんな先生を選んだらいいと思いますか。

Prof. Yoshikawa: I think it would be better to choose someone who is easy to talk to.

吉川先生: そうですね。あの話がしやすい人を選んだ方がいいんじゃないかと思うんですよね。当然ね。

Arai: Ah, the relationship between teacher and student as people strongly affect effective language learning.

新井: ああ、やっぱり言語を勉強するので人と人の関係ということですね。

Prof. Yoshikawa: That's right. If the conversation doesn't have a good flow, you cannot practise. I think it would be better to choose someone you feel comfortable talking to.

吉川先生: そうですね。話が続かないと練習にならないですから。話しやすいと思える方を選んだ方がいいんじゃないかと。

Arai: I think so too. There are also some learners who want to study at home outside of lessons, or study by themselves without a school or a teacher. What would you suggest for them?

新井: そうですね。 あとは自宅で、レッスン以外の時間に勉強したりとか、学校や先生がいなくても一人で勉強したいという方もいらっしゃると思うんですけど、そういう方の場合におすすめの勉強法とかありますか。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Nowadays, we can get all kinds of information on the Internet, so I think it is important to actually watch movies and animations that interest you, or watch the news if you want to watch the news. One piece of advice from my experience is that it is better to watch materials with subtitles.

吉川先生: そうですね。今インターネットでいろんな情報が手に入るので、興味のある動画、映画とかアニメでもいいですし、ニュース見たいんだったらニュースを見ればいいと思いますけど、そういったものを実際に見てみるっていうのは大事だと思うんです。一つは経験からのアドバイスは字幕があるものを見た方が良くて、聞き流すのでもいいんですけど、字幕があると何を言っているかわかりやすいので。

Arai: Yes.

新井: はい。

Prof. Yoshikawa: I think it is also important to go out and meet Japanese friends or go out (to access more learning opportunities, Japanese restaurants etc), although there might be some limitations (depending on circumstances).

吉川先生: あとはいろんな条件があると思いますけど、出かけていって誰か日本人のお友達と会うとか、外に出ていくっていうのも 大事だと思うんですけど。

Arai: I see. That is true. In addition, I think that there are many difficulties when studying, and there may be a problem of not being able to continue.

新井: はい、そうですね。でも勉強しているといろいろ大変なことも多かったりして続けられないという問題も出てくると思うんですが、そういう場合の対策とか、何かアドバイスしていただけますか。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Yes, I think so too. Well, I think it is important to take a break. As I said before, going to a Japan-related event or making friends with people outside is a good way to stimulate communication, so I think it helps. It will be very good for Speaking skills.

吉川先生: そうですね。まあ、一回ちょっと休んでみるっていうのは大事だと思うんですけど。ちょっと休んでみて、もう一回始めてみると違うものが見えてきたりするし、やっぱ気分転換って大事だと思うんで、さっき言ったみたいに日本関係のイベントに行ってみるとか、お友達になってみるとか、外に出るっていうのはやっぱりコミュニケーションを取る上で刺激になるのでとてもいいと思いますし。

Also, learning a language is not something where you grow as steadily as you think you will. It is important not to worry too much that you are not making much progress. So, even if you think your work is a little stagnant, it is better to continue to work on it and sometimes try something different. When you go out and do something else, you often encounter something new and it may take you up like this.

あと、語学の学習って、思ったほどこう着実に成長するものではなくて、 ある時、突然こう行くので、あまり進歩してないなってあまり悩まないっていうのは大事かもしれないですね。 ある時突然、ああ、分かったっていうことがあるんで、まあ、そのちょっと停滞していると思っても、それを続けていって、ちょっと刺激になることを時々やってみたりするといいんじゃないかと思いますね。何か外に出て行った時に、突然何かに気づいてこうパッと上がったりするので。

In that sense, rather than doing the same thing for a long time and worrying that it won't get better, you should go out and refresh yourself, or stop doing it for a while and try something else. I think those things are rather important. In this way, I think you can keep going much further for a long time.

そういう意味ではずっと同じことをやって、良くならないなって悩むよりは、何か外に出て行ってみるとかちょっとやめてなんか他のことを一回やってみるとか。 その辺が割と重要かな。逆に長く続くんじゃないかなと。

Arai: It doesn't go like this, it doesn't go up steadily. So, in order to get over that period, you just need to find a way to keep going.　

新井: このようにいかないんですね、上がっていかないので、そこを乗り切るには、ただ続ける方法を見つける。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Yes, that's right.

吉川先生: そうですね。

Arai: A change.

新井: 気分転換。

Prof. Yoshikawa: I think a change to refresh your mind is important.

吉川先生: 気分転換が大事だと思います。

Arai: I really agree with you. Thank you very much. Before we finish, would you give a message for those who are studying Japanese language hard, please?

新井: ということですね。 ありがとうございます。じゃ最後にですね、頑張って日本語を勉強している皆さんに何か応援のメッセ ージをお願いします。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Sure. Well, I think there are many things you can enjoy while studying Japanese, so I think it would be best if you enjoy the moment, or rather have fun. I think it would be best if you find something you like and study while enjoying it.

吉川先生: そうですね。まあ、日本語勉強していろいろ楽しいことがたくさんあると思うので、 楽しく勉強してもらえると、まあ勉強っていうか楽しくやってもらうのが一番かなと思いますので。なんか好きなものを見つけて、それをやりながら勉強するといいんじゃないかなと思います。

Arai: Absolutely. The best way is to have fun. If you do that, you will continue automatically. 

新井: はい。楽しいのが一番ですね。そうすれば続きますからね。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Yes, I think so.

吉川先生: そうそう。

Arai: Thank you very much for your time today.

新井: じゃあ今日は貴重なお時間をどうもありがとうございました。

Prof. Yoshikawa: Not at all, thank you very much.

吉川先生: いえいえ、ありがとうございました。
