Hello. Do you have your favourite tableware? What would you do if you broke it? ‘Kintsugi (gold bonding)’ can be one of the solutions if you don’t want to throw it away. Today, I’d like to introduce the traditional Japanese recycling – ‘kintsugi’ on 1) the history and methods, 2) valuing an item and 3) my view of life. I hope it will broaden your views.

1) The history and methods
The liquid from lacquer tree is adhesive and you can put the pieces of broken tableare together and make it reusable. This method was seen from the earthenware back in ‘Jomon’ Period (approximately BC 12000 – BC 2300) in Japan (Wikipedia). The gold coating was used from ‘Muromachi’ Period (AD 1336- AD1573). From that time, the tea ceremony and its philosophy of no waste and simple life known as ‘wabi-sabi’ became popular.

2) Valuing an item
It is important to use your favourite or memorable tableware for eating and drinking in our daily life as it makes you feel happy every day. But would you throw it away when it breaks? It must be hard. Then, you can use ‘kintsugi’ in order to revive it. On top of that, it will be more precious as the only design in the world.

I gave the English tea cup in the photo to the tea ceremony master who kindly provided a tea ceremony to my students in London a few years ago. The broken cup has got its life again with ‘kintsugi’ and she can still use it. The following is her comment.
‘I broke this precious cup I received from Mineko-san and it was impossible to throw it away. Also, it was important to keep our precious relationship (by keeping the precious cup from Mineko-san). The damaged cup did not become imperfect. It actually shows my desire for keeping it (in my life) and this action is so valuable. I can use the cup with a more deeply attached feeling. I always tell this story every time I show it to others. It is not just a container. It has a story.’

3) My view of life
When the film director of Star Wars – The Rise of Skywaker visited Japan, he said that it was actually ‘kintsugi’ when Kylo Ren repaired his mask. He wanted to show the importance of repairing rather than covering the deficits.

It is true that we are not perfect and each of us has uniqueness. When we want to value it and make the most of it, it might be nice to use ‘kintsugi’ into our lifestyle and polish up our life.

Do you have your favourite tableware? When it breaks, ‘kintsugi’ might be a good idea to revive and make it unique and precious than ever with your appreciation and love. What kind of recycling methods do you have in your country? I hope you enjoyed the topic today.
