Roses are the most famous flower from the U.K. June is the season, and I am writing this blog in a rose garden in England. I would like to introduce how people enjoy the season and the flowers in each country.
The Sakura (cherry blossom) are the most famous flower from Japan, but they are in full bloom for only a short period of time, about five days or so every year. So Japanese people make an effort to see Sakura during this short period. However, the roses in this rose garden have been in full bloom for the last three weeks now, so unlike Sakura, you can enjoy them for a longer period of time, so there is no need to rush to see them.
My students often go to Japan in order to see Sakura in full bloom, but the timing is difficult. One told me that she tired three times in the spring but Sakura had not bloomed yet, or another case, it was too late. In Japan, we feel the value of the transience of life, but do you think it would be better if Sakura bloomed for about a month like roses?
When Sakura trees bloom, the trees are big, but each flower is small and light pink, and a single flower does not have a very strong presence. But the charm of Sakura is that when many are gathered together, they make the entire big Sakura tree light pink, which looks like the Japanese group society. The rose tree is small, but each flower is quite big and colourful, such as dark pink and yellow, and the presence of each flower is appealing and looks like the individualistic society in the UK.
As a way to enjoy the flowers, in Japan, when Sakura bloom, people bring their own bento boxes and alcohol and go out to view the Sakura. In the UK, many people have a picnic in a park, but not many do so in a rose garden. Some do, but it is different from ‘Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) ‘style in Japan. Perhaps it is like a Japanese garden, where you walk around and enjoy looking at the flowers.
Also, just as we drink Sakura tea in Japan, we have rose tea in the UK. Both the Japanese and the British like to drink tea, and both have the same thinking to make tea from flowers.
By the way, I have seen Kit Kiat with Sakura flavoured chocolates in Sakura season, but I have not seen rose flavoured. It would be interesting to try if there were.
What flowers are famous from your country? How do you enjoy them? In this article, I wanted to introduce how Japanese people feel about and enjoy the seasons and the flowers. I hope you enjoyed it.
