日本では6月の初めに箪笥（たんす）の中を冬服から夏服に入れ替え、学生は決まった日から寒くても全員夏の制服を着るという校則に従います。週末休まず「衣替え」に忙しくしている人も多いかもしれません。私が考えるメリット①ミニマリズム、②夏のメンタル、③やっかいな湿気の3つを紹介します。

Japanese people swap winter and summer clothes in the early June and students have to wear the summer uniform from the set date despite the temperature. Many people can be busy with ‘koromogae (swapping clothes in the wardrobe)’ on weekends. I will share the possible reasons for this seasonal custom from the aspects of 1) minimalism, 2) mental benefit and 3) humidity.

 ①必要なものだけを出して、必要ないものはしまうという考え方があります。これは夜に必要な布団を出し、朝起きたらしまうのと同じ習慣だと思います。また、国土の７０％ほどが山で人が住めるスペースが限られているので、家もタンスも小さく、スペースを有効活用することが大事です。

Japanese people tend to keep something necessary and remove something not necessary, like we put futon on the floor when we sleep and put it back to the storage in the morning. Effective use of space is important because Japanese house is small and the wardrobe is also small. Our living space is limited because almost 70 % of Japan is mountainous.

 ②日本の夏は暑すぎて冬の寒さが想像できません。もし夏に冬のコートが箪笥にあったら、見るだけでも暑苦しいし、触りたくもないです。だから、夏にはコットンの服だけ見ている方がメンタルにもいいんですね。 Summer in Japan is incredibly hot and you cannot imagine how cold it was last winter. It is impossible to see your winter clothes in summer and you really do not want to touch them either. So, it is mentally good if you can see only cool summer clothes with cotton in the wardrobe.

 ③6月は梅雨の時期で湿気が多くなるのでその前に冬物をしまいます。6月の終わりに湿気を吸収した冬服をしまうと、虫に食われる可能性が高くなるからです。全ての冬服をしまう前にクリーニングなどできれいにしてからしまいます。そして、これから来る夏に備えて夏物を出しておきます。People put the winter clothes into the storage in order to avoid the humidity because it is a rainy season in June. In this way, you can protect the winder clothes from worm bites. We clean all the winter clothes as well. Then, put summer clothes in the wardrobe to be ready for summer.

ところで、私がイギリスに来た年の6月に衣替えをして以来ここでは全然していません。夏でも寒い日があって、また冬服を出したり、1か月ぐらい頑張ったんですが、結局夏服も冬服も出しておくことにしました。ここでは大きいワードローブが必要ですが、毎年衣替えしなくて楽になりました！

By the way, I gave up ‘koromogae’ after the first attempt in the first June I moved to the UK, because it was still cold sometimes and I often needed to get my warm clothes. I need a big wardrobe but I can save time from ‘koromogae’ here!
